Christmas in Ukraine
The main Christmas tree of Ukraine will be opened soon at Independence Square in Kyiv. On December, 20 the lights on the tree will be officially turned on. This year Kyiv authorities spent about 180 thousand US dollars for the tree and its decoration. The Ukrainian Christmas tree is the tallest in Europe – 35 meters (115 feet) high. It has a metal stem and about 400 natural pine trees. The tree is decorated with 5 kilometers (3,11 miles) of diode lights.
For the opening ceremony and other red-letter days the Kyiv authorities have planned several free folklore concerts and stage performances on Independence Square illustrating traditional ways of celebrating Christmas and New Year in different regions of Ukraine.
The Kyiv Christmas tree will be open for a whole month from December 20, 2008 to January 20, 2009.
