Using Metro and City Transport
Which cities of Ukraine have metro system?
There is metro in Kiev, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
Is metro popular among Ukrainians?
Yes, it is very popular and used daily by majority of large cities/ population. Metro (underground, subway) is the fastest, very inexpensive and convenient kind of public transport in the city. The Kiev metro is open from 5.30am till midnight. The cost of one ride is 50 Kopeks (it is about 10 cents U.S), no matter how far one is travelling.
How often do the trains in metro go?
In Kiev metro, the average interval between trains is 1-2 minutes in the rush hours (8-10 am, 5-7 pm) and 5 minutes during the rest of the day. After 10pm you may have to wait 15-20 minutes. Trains strictly follow the timetable, so passengers always know they will arrive to their destinations on time.
In Kharkiv (Kharkov) the interval between trains is about 3-4 minutes; in late evening - about 10 minutes.
How do I pay for riding metro?
The system is similar in all cities. You need to buy coins (for less than $0.2 each), which are available in small outlets right in metro stations. Then, you should put in your coin into the slot of the coins machine, on entering the metro platform. Make sure to keep your coin in your right hand, and put it into the slot of the right-hand machine. There are two lights - red and green - just above the slot, to signal you when that your coin has been accepted and you may go. Please, make sure that you see how the light has changed from red to green after you put in the coin. Then, you may pass through.
